San Antonio Riverwalk #1
Angla (Alex) Weddle
I Am A River
I am a deep river
entangled and flowing free
murky dark
and sparkling with light
sometimes hidden from view
other times flowing for all to see
at my deepest
I am cold, swift, and overpowering
but I curve gently at the bend
and dance with the edges
most times I allow you
to float safely on me
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Connecting this evening with Red Wolf Poems and dVerse Poets Pub. Red Wolf offered Weddle ‘s painting San Antonio Riverwalk #1 as this week’s prompt; and of course this is open link night at dVerse. To both, I offer my poem I Am A River.
Good word choice to match the painting.
I really enjoyed my one visit to the San Antonio Riverwalk. Your poem made me realize that a human is much like a river in many ways.
Thank you, Mary. I meant it to describe a river as well as a person. Very glad that came across.
Sabra, yes, only sometimes do we allow others that liberty of floating on us. Very nice read for me this evening. Thank you.
And the river doesn’t always allow us to float on it either. Glad you enjoyed reading my poem, Pam. Thank you for visiting.
Oh, how I love this poem! The contrasts, in rivers, as in people. I especially like “I curve gently at the bend and dance with the edges.” Lovely.
oh nice… i would so love to jump into this river and just let me carry a bit… that would be wonderful… love that you showed both – the depth and light-hearted dancing side of it
Thanks, Claudia. I didn’t learn to swim until I was an adult, so I respect the moods of water, especially a river. Love that you visited.
I like how you used the river as a metaphor and the idea that no one is either all good or all bad.
I loved this – I took it as a metaphor of a person. The complexity of one with deep primal reactions, rarely seen, superficially gentle and calm, enticing. An interesting person to take a ride though life with. Of course, I could be wrong, but it was beautiful imagery, Sabra. Thank you. – Vivienne, of OneVoicePoetry.
Thank you, Vivienne. Reading your comment, I’m struck with your beautiful writing. And you are correct; my poem describes a river and a person, not a particular one, but in general. I appreciate your visit.
Having the power of a river is a responsibility indeed, and something others often don’t respect. I speak literally and figuratively. Those who are deep and quiet will roar when tested. I really, really enjoyed this, Sabra.
So glad you enjoyed my poem and I appreciate your thoughtful comment. Yes, they will roar when tested, just as a quiet river roars when it meets rough places. 🙂
What a wonderful metaphor, Sabra. I live near a river. They never cease to teach us. Right now, after 3 years of drought in Northern Nevada, things are a bit still. But still alive. Like the seasons of our lives, I suppose.
I remember creeks in the country – they seemed quite a bit clearer than the creek here. Maybe it is due to the elevation? I like your last stanza – as I can see the progress of the growing goslings and their parents floating gently by this spring into summer.
The metaphor of a person as a river is very strong.. and there are also those raving rivers cutting deep canyons — leaving impressions but also scars — charisma of those rivers particularly enchanting and dangerous.
Bjorn, I like your mention of scars being left by rivers, and we know, left by people too. Thanks for visiting!
Sabra, thanks for commenting at my blog! Yes, Riley is a great daughter who is now 25 and just graduated with an art degree from Laguna Institute in CA. She is so talented. Her site, should you care to check it out, is http://www.paintburger.com.
I know this stretch of water! Played on the Riverwalk at Stefania’s, jazz. I love your description of the river in all its various phases of movement. And, as my friend Hannah says, it is a metaphor for life with ITS OWN currents and eddies… That painting really caught the atmosphere. My friend Bob Fancher has a flower shop by the RiverWalk! Thanks again, your new friend and fan, Amy
I see that Riley is a talented artist! I wish her much success. Thanks for leaving her link for me. 🙂 What fun to know that you know this Riverwalk intimately. Once I started writing my poem, I realized what a perfect metaphor the river was. The poem flowed out, whole. So glad you visited and left me a comment, Amy. 🙂
