Separate Ways

Sunday Whirl 142behind her
the first scarlet rays
struck the sky

the pair knew they didn’t
have a moment to spare

he had expected this day
and saved a bit for it

they stood in a long, loving caress
then using all their might
they walked separate ways

Written for The Sunday Whirl.  The words this week:  bit, might, behind, spare, caress, sky, save, expect, pair, struck, scarlet, first.

  1. A tight and economical use of the words to create a coherent and satisfying result. I like it.

  2. Jae Rose says:

I think it’s a fine piece..purposeful..direct..and an honesty that we could do well to apply to the real world

  3. kaykuala says:

It takes great courage to confront the situation and resolves to go separate ways. It puts thinking into play to create such a poem as this. Well wrapped up Sabra!

Yours appears to be a gentler breakup than that in my piece. A relationship can be habit forming and realization finally sinks in that it is going nowhere. Glad you did play.

Thank you oldegg for your visit and comments. I always appreciate hearing from you. Off in a few to read yours. I like the poems you write about relationship. There is always honesty in them.

There is a whole novel here in ten lines! I love how tight this is and how crisp the images!

    Unexpected twist.

  14. 1sojournal says:

Endings are also beginnings. You’ve captured that sense with your economical use of the words.

yes, it does take might…. hard to put your arms around it but one can definitely sit upon the mountain…. love this in every way… the softness shining through and the grit still sticks in my teeth….
